Agnes Barton is not your typical senior citizen living in Tadium, MI, on the shores of Lake Huron. She drives a red hot Mustang, shops at Victoria's Secret, rankles local police officials, and has a knack for sticking her nose where it doesn't belong. What does a murder that happened forty-three years ago have to do with missing tourist Jennifer Martin? Agnes makes it her personal mission to find out, and she's not letting the fact she's seventy-two get in the way. Butting heads with Sheriff Clem Peterson is something she's accustomed to, but lately Clem seems to be acting even more strange, making Agnes wonder what he may be hiding ala the Martin disappearance. Agnes' partner in crime, Eleanor Mason tags along, Watson to her Holmes. Together, they unearth clues. If only Eleanor would behave, as although lovable, she has a knack for getting into trouble by tangling with her rival, Dorothy Alton, or flirting with anyone - male or female - and gossiping! She's incorrigible, but she does carry a Pink Lady revolver in her purse, one that has proved useful at times. Life for Agnes and Eleanor is shaken up when Agnes' former boss and secret crush comes to Tadium. Before long, the lady sleuths have more on their hands to contend with as goons roll into town and bullets begin to fly.

Armed and Outrageous An Agnes Barton Mystery Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Toni Orans Madison Johns Books

I gave up one-third of the way through. I enjoyed some of the humor in the first chapter, but the repetitive beat of bodily function and sex drivel from the geriatric duo of Agnes and Eleanor became boring. It was like reading a joke book in one sitting. The first ones are good, but by the tenth page, the humor seems tired. My greatest gripe, however, is with the poor proof reading. I believe there's nothing wrong or bad about not being a perfect speller or have great command of grammar, but I become totally upset when authors won't seek the help of someone who is proficient in these areas to proof the work. There are plenty of English teachers who would be happy to do the work for a reasonable price, or perhaps for a note of appreciation in the book itself.

Armed and Outrageous An Agnes Barton Mystery Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Toni Orans Madison Johns Books Reviews

I am not sure why this book is listed with the cozy mysteries, other than the lead characters are two elderly women. The writing was difficult to follow along with, mostly because there was so much name dropping (restaurants, celebrities, car brands, etc). Also, I skipped through a good portion of Eleanor's dialogue, so many of her antics were unnecessary. Throughout the book the main character "Agnes" keeps referencing the old days, which got to be a bit much. I love the good old days as much as anyone, but less is more. And will someone explain to me why ninety percent of the male characters are portrayed as lecherous womanizers? One is plenty. It just made Andrew and Trooper Sales that much more unbelievable.

What disturbed me about this book was the level of violence. I chose this book because it was a "cozy mystery" which are supposed to have minimal violence. But I agree with the other critical reviews, it was wrought with gratuitous sex and violence, most of it from Eleanor. I can see how the author might have wanted to make the character seem edgy, but I'm sorry to say it failed. If they cleaned up the filth and reworked the plot it could be a good book. Too be fair, not everyone is going to enjoy the excessive sex and violence this book comes with and that's fine. The issue I have is that this book is blatantly mislabeled.
The premise was interesting; a littl' ol' lady solving mysteries--like a modern Miss Marple, perhaps? As a littl' ol' lady myself, I thought, "this could be fun!" However...it wasn't. The author was so obsessed with adding sex to her story, at least in the almost constant comments that the characters made to each other, that the plot took second place. I couldn't even make it half way thru the book. I am sorry I wasted my money on this one.
I did not read the entire book, so maybe I'm not qualified to write a review. However, the reason I quit reading it, despite my high expectations, is the ongoing fixation on sex which the main character, Agnes Barton, and her best friend, Eleanor Mason, constantly display.

Please don't get me wrong -- I find it perfectly okay for adult people, no matter how old they are, to be interested in the pleasures of making love and in pursuing an active love life. But too much is too much, especially in a book that is labeled cozy mystery. I did not expect to be confronted with oversexed seniors and consider it inappropriate in this kind of book.

Some romance is fine, but this is simply vulgar filth. Maybe it's meant to be funny and I just don't get this kind of dirty humor. In my opinion it is repulsive and doesn't carry a plot.

My overall impression was that this author would love to write porn, but for one reason or another she doesn't do it; instead, she is pushing that weird vulgar stuff on the unsuspecting reader.

I quit reading it when those two ladies investigated in the backroom of the bikini store and the author absolutely had to describe all those sex toys. Yuck. Then Eleanor Barton came up with the idea to pull a prank on her friends by cooking a dildo and I was definitely done with the book. I mean, how sick is that, even if we give her the benefit of advanced dementia?

I do agree with other reviewers who suggest a rating for books.

Fortunately there are plenty of really good writers of cozy mysteries, so I simply deleted this book and put the author on my personal blacklist.
I found the senior sex scenes degrading and unnecessary. The author trivializes her plot which had some merit, although not strong on logic, with the unlikely antics of her senior heroines. Although not yet a senior citizen myself, I found the author's attempt to make her seniors citizens "hip" by engaging in casual oral sex in the bathroom and smoking weed, pathetic. I found this book so offensive I permanently deleted it from my .
If you didn't get past 10th grade in education or personal evolution, you may enjoy this novel. It is a tasteless book with a far-fetched and insulting view of seniors. They are not active, funny and smart. They are dottering, stubborn, immature and ugly. I am a child of the sixties and not prudish about sex, but the unappealing sex in this story is used as a gimmick in an attempt to make these old folks seem cool. It failed to accomplish its task. The constant references to bodily functions is reminiscent of the maturity level of a nine-yar-old boy. And, no, carrying concealed weapons and using them thoughtlessly, eating pot-laced brownies, and performing excretory and related bodily functions in public does not make one an active, vital, and interesting older person. Expelling gas in public is funny to nine-year-old boys but retaining that sense of humor beyond puberty dosn't make you young; it makes you tasteless. Just glad I didn't pay for this kindle book. The book makes me long for they days when self-publishing was considered vanity and not taken seriously. As a former Michigander and a person of age, I just couldn't relate.
