In Fire and Steel, David Cook has written five novellas and a short story that detail the military exploits of five different men, their brothers at arms, and the horrors they face on the battlefields in Ireland, Malta, Holland, Spain, and Belgium.
The debut novella, Liberty or Death, draws the reader into Ireland’s tumultuous history. Set during Ireland’s Great Rebellion of 1798, Cook weaves a tight, action-filled tale that is vivid in description with well-developed characters and brutal battle scenes.
The story explores the hardships of the Irish people and the conflicting loyalties of those of Irish heritage fighting for the English. The action revolves around one man’s hunt for a savage murderer whose marauding hinders the fragile peace talks.
In Liberty or Death, as well as in the additional short story The Emerald Graves which details the Battle of Vinegar Hill, Cook weaves together two genres—historical and thriller—into a gripping, raw tale that proves he’s a new name to be watched in historical fiction.
The second installment in the Soldier Chronicles, Heart of Oak, is military history and adventure at its best. Set in the late eighteenth-century during the Napoleonic Wars, the novella explores the fight between the French and English over the Isle of Malta, particularly the island of Gozo.
The tale is riveting and fast-paced, filled with unexpected but realistic plot twists. The hero, Gamble, is authentic, and through his and others’ inner turmoil, Cook gives the reader a heartrending glimpse into the inner turmoil and mental trauma war inflicts on those on the front lines. Even so, the story is filled with humor. Cook’s mastery of dialogue brings the characters to life on the page, and the battle scenes are vividly detailed.
Well-researched and engrossing, Heart of Oak is as lyrical a tale as it is gritty, as action-packed as it is atmospheric.
The third entry, Blood on the Snow, is a harrowing tale of war, bravery, duty, and camaraderie. Cook packs a full story into a novella-length page count and details a British regiment’s retreat across the frozen landscape of the Netherlands in the midst of the Flanders Campaign of the late eighteenth century.
The tale follows Lieutenant Jack Hallam, an authentic and layered character, a man who simply wants to return home to his wife, who cares deeply for the men he leads, and who is fierce on the battlefield. Jack’s battered company faces enemies from without—French troops and deserters—and from within in the form of his own drunken bully of a captain. Cook’s adroitness with the English language transports the reader into the story and lends the tale a bittersweet poeticism The battles and skirmishes are realistic and grisly; the humor and camaraderie between the men is poignant and powerful; and the bleakness of the Holland winter and what the men must do to survive is gripping and uncomfortable.
Cook’s story is one of action and courage, riveting from the first page to the last. Blood on the Snow is a vivid exploration of duty, honor, and human resilience.
The fourth entry, Marksman, takes place in the sweltering summer of 1810 on the Iberian Peninsula. The French have decimated Spain, and only the guerrilleros are left to protect the villagers and fight off the pillaging of the French forces. The guerrilleros and lone Welshman Arthur Cadoc of the legendary 95th Rifle Regiment.
Cadoc is a brilliantly drawn character laconic, irreverent, quick with his fists, and deadly with his Baker rifle. Cadoc and the supporting cast of characters serve as the backbone of the story the naive and untried Captain George Cotton; Rai Herroro, who is driven by revenge; Helterlin and his dragoons. Along with intriguing and well-fleshed characters, Cook fills the novella with stellar details of the landscape, the weapons, and the culture.
Cook excels at capturing the brutality and atmosphere of battle. Just shy of one hundred pages in length, the story is well-paced and evolves grippingly in its short constraints. Marksman is a rousing tale of action, adventure, and camaraderie set within a tumultuous and uncertain era.
Death is a Duty is the fifth and final section of Fire and Steel. The tale centers around Regimental Sergeant Major Adam Bannerman of the 42nd Royal Highlanders, the horrors of Quatre-Bras, and finally the pivotal stand at Waterloo.
On the ground miles south of Brussels, it was not clear who was the victor until the final moments of the battle at Waterloo, and Cook does a stellar job of capturing the tumult, confusion, and feelings of futility—and duty. The characters are well-drawn, particularly the fierce, merciless, and brutal Bannerman with his trademark halberd. Cook’s dedication to setting the scene and researching the battles is evident on the page in the details he includes and the historical figures who pepper the story.
Cook does not shy away from the gore and brutality of combat or from the treachery and dishonor within the ranks. The tale reads grittily, with a fast-paced plot and an authentic voice. Death is a Duty is filled with wit, humor, and friendship as well as loss, betrayal, and vengeance.
Fire and Steel is a stellar compilation that explores the decisive and sometimes little-known battles that changed the course of history in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The series of tales is also a brilliant ode to the men who fought for honor, for duty, and mainly for the men by their sides.
